WNS was organized on March 18, 1927 under the name of the Washington Coin Club. On May 24, 1929 the name was changed to Washington Numismatic Society. Members thought the word “numismatic” accurately defined the club’s fields of interest because it included, not only coins, but medals, tokens, paper money, and other medias of exchange.
